DEPART USA
Depart the United States for your trans-Atlantic flight to
Izmir, Turkey. Meals served in flight.
ARRIVE IN IZMIR / TRANSFER TO KUSADASI
Arrive in Izmir, Turkey. Transfer to your bus and travel to Kusadasi for dinner and overnight.
HIERAPOLIS / COLOSSAE / LAODICEA / KUSADASI
Begin the day in Hierapolis, the ancient city built at the hot springs. Mentioned in his letter to
the nearby Colossians (chapter 4), the remains here include a vast Necropolis (graveyard), theater,
and Temple of Apollo. Not far from here is the tel of Colossae, Home to the Colossians of Paul’s letter. The Bible does not document a visit from Paul, but Epaphras is said to have founded
the church here, and Philemon was a slave here. Laodicea (near modern Denizli) is another
of the Seven Cities (Revelation 3), and is also mentioned in Colossians (Chapters 2 & 4). Ruins
are scattered about, with water pipes clogged with limestone witness to the effects of “lukewarm”
water. Turn north to return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
EPHESUS
Enjoy a day in ancient Ephesus, where Paul lived and later wrote to (Acts 2,6, 18-19 & I
and II Timothy). This was also one of the Seven Churches (Romans 2). Explore the extensive
ruins including the famous Celcus Library and Theater near the harbor. Nearby is the
remains of the Basilica of St. John, one of the leading churches of early Christianity during
Byzantine times. Visit the Museum of Ephesus where no finds are being added every year.
Return to Kusadasi for dinner and overnight.
PATMOS
This morning, take a ferry to the island of Patmos. Visit the Monastery of St. John, perched
high on the mountain overlooking the entire island and the sea beyond. Pray in the Grotto of
the Apocalypse, where John lived and wrote the Revelation and other correspondence to the
early church. Return this evening by ferry to Kusadasi for dinner and overnight.
SMYRNA / SARDIS / PHILADELPHIA / PAMUKKALE
Start out today for the port city of Smyrna (present day Izmir) another of the Seven
Churches (Revelation 2). The early leader of the church Polycarp was martyred here in 153
AD. Continue inland to the ruins of Sardis, another of the Seven Churches (Revelation
3). The city was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, and Byzantine remains
can be found here, as well as a synagogue. Travel on to Philadelphia (today’s Alasehir),
another of the Seven Churches (Revelation 3), where pillars of a Byzantine Church are visible.
Stop for dinner and overnight in Pamukkale, home to the famed “cotton fortress” –
where springs deposit limestone in pools that overflow one into another down a hillside.
PERGAMUM
Journey to Pergamum (modern Bergama), where the first Christians were executed by
Rome. This was the one of the Seven Churches of the Revelation (Revelation 2), and
Christianity came here early. You will see the foundations of the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Athena, the fable Acropolis and the Royal Gate. Here Parchment was developed,
leading to Pergamum becoming one of the largest libraries in the ancient world. One
of the ancient world’s foremost healing centers was here, down in the valley in site of the
Acropolis. Continue on to Thyatira (modern Akhisar), the hometown of Lydia (Acts 16)
– the merchant of purple, and one of t he Seven Churches of the Revelation (Revelation
2). Inscriptions have been uncovered here relating to the dying of purple cloth. Continue
on to Istanbul for dinner and overnight.
ISTANBUL
Take in this city that is truly the crossroads of East and West, Europe and Asia, past and present. Visit Hagia Sophia, the church was built by Justinian in the 6th century and has also been a mosque, before being restored now as a museum. Stop at the Blue Mosque, built in the 1600’s during the Ottoman Empire. See remains of the Roman city nearby, including parts of the Hippodrome. Shop in the Grand Bazaar, a maze of small shops collected
under one large roof.
ATHENS
Say goodbye to Turkey as we fly from Istanbul to Athens. Visit the Acropolis, home to the
world famous Parthenon and Erectheum. Stop at Mars Hill, where Paul spoke of the temple
to the "unknown god"(Acts 17). Look out over the Agora (Marketplace). See the
House of Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Presidential Palace of the modern state of Greece. Check into your Athens hotel for dinner and overnight.
CORINTH
Journey to Corinth, where Paul wrote to the Thessalonians and later to the Romans. The temple of Apollo stands at the entrance to the ruins. Visit the site of the synagogue. Walk
through the Agora. Stand before the Bema (judgment seat), where Paul was charged before
the leaders of Corinth. See Accrocorinth high above the city, where the ancient Temple to
Aphrodite stood. Stop at the mostly underwater remains of the port of Cenchareae, where
Paul departed for his return to Jerusalem (Acts 18). Cross over the famous Corinth Canal,
started by Nero and completed by the French engineering team that built the Suez Canal
in the late 1800's. Return to Athens for dinner and overnight.
RETURN TO USA
Return to the United States with memories and inspiration from the early church.
